Franchisee training programs vary from industry to industry and brand to brand; however, these three components should remain the same, regardless of those factors.

Effective Management of Expectations

Effective management of franchisee expectations from the outset is vital. Clear communication should start at the recruitment phase, outlining the support you offer in areas such as setup, location selection, marketing and customer service.

You should provide potential franchisee candidates with an accurate view of the responsibilities and routines expected of them each day and ensure they’re given realistic timelines and growth projections for their financial planning and staffing considerations.

Facilitating conversations between potential and current franchisees will provide invaluable insights to the newcomers on how to successfully navigate your business model. This can also contribute to a sense of community within your brand, which is rewarding for franchisees and can lead to collaboration that benefits all parties.

A Strong Foundation and Ongoing Support Systems

Franchisee training programs should be designed in a way that gives franchisees everything they need to be successful with the brand. This includes training that helps the franchisee understand the business model, learn the skills needed to carry out the systems and processes, and develop a strong relationship with the franchisor.

The initial training process should, of course, be tailored to the specific franchise's needs and its given industry but, regardless, it should include a variety of written materials, face-to-face (or virtual) sessions and opportunities for practice or growth. Written materials allow franchise owners to return to resources over time when necessary and help instill a sense of preparedness. Face-to-face sessions allow for dialogue and conversations that not only encourage relationship building, but also provide an opportunity to ask questions about aspects you may have not thought to include in the written materials.

Depending on the industry, on-the-job training, shadowing or mentoring programs allow franchisees to experience the role with lower stakes and to get some practice in before they set off on their own.

After the initial training is complete, ongoing support is vital as franchisees’ needs will evolve over time. This is why it’s important to establish a secure relationship with each franchisee in the beginning stages of training, so that they’re comfortable in returning with questions and feel confident in the guidance you offer.

Listening to Franchisees and Accepting Feedback

As part of the ongoing support you offer franchisees, enable a consistent feedback loop. You can do this through franchisee surveys, open forums and by simply establishing strong relationships so franchisees feel comfortable coming forward with their insights. Expressing willingness to address concerns and take actionable steps reaffirms the strength of the partnership between franchisee and franchisor and can lead to valuable improvements.

Effective Training Leads to Successful Franchising

Comprehensive franchise training programs include initial training through a variety of avenues, ongoing support, and transparent communication between the franchisee and the franchisor. By combining these three essential components, franchisors can build a robust foundation for franchisees so they are able to go forward and grow.
